About This Quote

Terza-rima is a variation of the musical scale. It's made up of three notes sung in succession. Every time I hear the phrase, I think of Rimbaud's poetry, which I found to be quite affecting. As an art student, I learned that terza-rima was one of the first classical techniques poets used to create their works. The French Romantic poet Arthur Rimbaud is famous for having written many poems in terza-rima.

Today, it is often used as a literary gimmick to explain the meaning of a work. For example, Terry Pratchett says he uses terza-rima to explain why wizards are so obsessed with magic. My favorite use of this phrase is by my favorite Shakespearean actor, Ian McKellen.

He explains how he came up with his memorable character Gandalf in the popular Lord of the Rings trilogy by saying, “I had never known any man to die while speaking in terza-rima” (The Two Towers, 2002).
